3D printed spare and replacement parts

Printing a spare part is the practical answer when the original is discontinued, the minimum order from the manufacturer is a thousand pieces, or the machine is down now and the lead time is six weeks. It works when the part is plastic, when its job is understood, and when a functional equivalent is acceptable rather than a certified identical replacement. It does not work as a way to copy a part that is still available and still protected.

Batch of small white printed bushings, sleeves and textured panels nested together on a single build plate beneath the print head
A mixed batch on one plate. Nesting parts this way is why quantity moves the price per piece.

What actually decides the job

Match the job, not the original material

The original was injection moulded and its material was chosen for moulding. A printed replacement is a different process, so the right question is what the part has to survive: heat, sunlight, repeated flexing, or chemicals.

A worn part is a poor measuring reference

Measure the mating features rather than the broken one. Where the original is in pieces, the housing it fits is usually the more reliable reference.

Print two

The second one costs far less than the first, because the setup is already done. The part failed once and will fail again, and the second one on the shelf is the difference between an hour of downtime and another six weeks.

What cannot be replaced this way

Anything carrying a safety certification, anything under pressure, and anything whose failure mode is somebody getting hurt. Those need the original or an engineered equivalent, not a printed one.

Materials, in the order they are usually recommended

  1. PETG
  2. ABS
  3. Nylon PA12
  4. ASA

Every one of them is priced automatically, so the cheapest way to settle the choice is to quote the same file in two materials and compare. The full list is on the materials page.
