Shipping 3D printed parts from the EU to the UK: VAT, duty and the GBP 135 rule
3Descu is a 3D printing bureau in Romania that ships low volume plastic parts, prototypes and short run batches to UK engineering teams. The price in the instant quote excludes VAT and shipping. This page explains what happens to that parcel at the UK border, in plain terms, so the landed cost holds no surprises.

The short version
| Goods value of the order, excluding shipping | What you need at checkout | What happens at the border |
|---|---|---|
| GBP 135 or less | Your business's UK VAT number (GB followed by 9 or 12 digits) | No import VAT to pay on arrival: you account for UK VAT yourself under the reverse charge |
| Over GBP 135 | Nothing extra (a UK VAT number is optional) | Import VAT and any duty are charged on delivery, through the courier |
In both cases the 3Descu invoice carries no EU VAT. It is an export of goods from the EU, and the invoice says "Export of goods outside the EU. Not subject to Romanian VAT."
Where the calculator draws the line
Quotes are in euro, so the calculator places the GBP 135 line at a fixed EUR 1.20 per pound, rounded up on purpose: it asks for a UK VAT number whenever the goods, excluding shipping, come to EUR 162 or less. Rounding up means an order close to the line is asked for the number rather than let through without it.
Orders of GBP 135 or less
Since 1 January 2021, UK VAT on goods sent into the UK in a consignment worth GBP 135 or less is charged at the point of sale, not at the border. The one exception is a buyer registered for UK VAT that gives its VAT number: the buyer then accounts for the VAT under the reverse charge.
3Descu is not registered for UK VAT, so a low-value UK order goes through with your UK VAT number. The calculator asks for it when the goods value is at or under the line and does not send the order without it. The invoice then prints the wording that tells HMRC who accounts for the VAT: "Export of goods outside the EU. Not subject to Romanian VAT. Reverse charge: customer to account for UK VAT to HMRC under VAT number GB...."
A business without a UK VAT number can order above the line, where no number is needed, or contact us first.
Orders over GBP 135
Above GBP 135 the parcel is a normal import. The invoice shows no VAT; the courier clears the goods, and UK import VAT (standard rate 20 %) plus any duty are charged to you on delivery, together with the courier's clearance fee.
If your business is VAT-registered, postponed VAT accounting lets you declare and recover the import VAT on your VAT return instead of paying it upfront. Tell the courier you use it when they contact you about clearance.
Delivery terms
Parts ship DAP by default: we arrange carriage to your address, and import VAT, any duty and the courier's clearance fee are yours. EXW is available on request. We prepare the export paperwork. The shipping cost is on the binding offer that a person emails the same business day; the instant quote shows the price of the parts.
Duty
Whether duty applies depends on the commodity code of the part and on its preferential origin under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. Check the rate for your part with your customs agent or the UK Integrated Online Tariff before a large order.
Delivery
Production runs 7 days a week, and small orders can be printed in as little as one day. Parts ship by tracked courier. The delivery date for your order, including transit to the UK, is shown with the quote before you order. Choose "United Kingdom" under "Outside the EU" in the destination list.
Why UK teams use a 3D printing bureau in the EU
- Price before the conversation: price and delivery date in under a minute, no account, no RFQ.
- Capacity for short runs: one of the largest 3D printing factories in Eastern Europe, with 200+ printers, FDM and SLA.
- Quality: ISO 9001:2015 certified factory. A part that does not match the agreed specification is reprinted or refunded, in writing.
- Confidentiality: mutual NDA on request, signed fast once the text is agreed.
- A person replies the same business day, by phone, WhatsApp or email.
Questions
Are prices in GBP?
Quotes and invoices are in euro.
Does Northern Ireland follow the same rules?
No. Goods moving from the EU to Northern Ireland follow EU VAT rules under the Windsor Framework. For a delivery to Northern Ireland, contact us before ordering so the invoice is set up correctly.
Can I see the landed cost before ordering?
The instant quote shows the price of the parts and the offer adds the shipping cost. Import VAT and any duty depend on your own VAT position and the commodity code, as described above.
